Forensics in My Backyard!

So, while I said I would bring the dog skeleton to school, I was not prepared for all the insect life that was working on it when I went to collect it this afternoon!
I wasn't ready to put it in a bag in my car...so I took the photos of the location of the skeleton, plus the two videos below. Then I moved the bones to a less obvious location so hopefully we can collect them when the insects have retreated.

Video below - look closely for the beetles scurrying about.

    1. Jalecia, I only touched it with my foot - not a whole kick! I wanted to move it to its other side to see what kind of insects were on the underside where it was out of the sun. As I suspected, and you noticed, there were beetles! They didn't like the sun, as they moved immediately into the little grooves and holes when I turned the head over.
I also didn't want my big foot in my old flip-flops in the video, so that's why I might look like I kicked it!
Would you want beetles and red ants on your hand or foot?

    1. I only have a couple Jonathan, so if you would like to bring yours to share that would be great! Oh - actually I just remembered Mrs. Olson that worked with you last year left me her BIG fossil...so if I don't ride my bike some day I can bring that. Otherwise it's too heavy.
      Thanks for offering.

  8. Dear Mrs. Harvey

The dog's skull is very interesting, I never seen one in my life.

    Where was it found?

  9. Emmanuel, it was found on the golf course behind my house, which is on the edge of the desert. We live in a high desert, so if you look at the photos above, you will see there are plants like sagebrush and rabbit brush, which are bushes. So it's not just sand blowing about! Sadly, someone had obviously tried to bury their pet, as there was a fuzzy blanket and a shallow hole near the skeleton. We are always finding bones when we are out running (my husband and I) since there are so many coyotes around here. I hear them howling and yipping almost every night!
We are still trying to clean the bones, but the water soaking idea was so nasty and smelly that we are letting them dry in the sun outside the back door of our school. We were worried some other kids would put their hands in the water and get some dangerous zootonic diseases!
Visit us again to see how we are doing on our project...plus we have a coyote skull soaking in hydrogen peroxide too.
